Pepsi Ads Appearing In Video Streaming Apps Through Samsung Smart TVs

Samsung Smart TV users have yet another lodged complaint about their TVs – unwanted Pepsi commercials.

The complaints first began when the TVs’ voice recognition software was found to be impeding on people’s privacy. Now, users have noted they’re seeing short unwanted Pepsi ads while they use the TVs, being imported into their video streaming apps, without third-party app provider knowledge.

The first problem was revealed in the company’s fine print of the voice recognition privacy policy. Samsung said changes have been made to the policy to explain better what is actually going on with the voice-capture process.

However, the newest complaints relate to a Pepsi ad that have begun showing up during users’ streaming content using their Smart TV apps from their video streaming service and personal medial libraries.

The problem was reported to be associated with the Plex streaming service, which is a brand of media player people can use to stream video from their personal library or hard drive and put it onto a Smart TV.

One Plex user complained that every 10 to 15 minutes, they saw a Pepsi advertisement on their Samsung TV.

Another Plex user went to the Samsung customer forum to complain, saying they upgraded the media server and began getting advertisements every 10 to 15 minutes from Pepsi. They said they thought they were seeing things until they kept seeing it over and over. Sometimes the ad causes the app to hang and the TV needs to be restarted.

Customers with Foxtel, Australia’s largest pay TV provider, have also reported issues with their Samsung TV. The Pepsi ad comes up while using the Foxtel streaming app that’s’ been built into the TV’s SmartHub interface.

A Foxtel user took the issue to the Foxtel forums, where the company read it and immediately wrote back that this issue should not be going on. They said it’s a Samsung-related issue and needs to be dealt with right away. The issue for Australia has been dealt with, and is the result of a mistake in a recent software update that wasn’t intended for that market.
