HBO GO Service Could Be Premium-Priced

HBO is still a little reluctant in regards to details of its soon standalone streaming service (HBO Go), but the network’s CEO did provide a little insight into what type of pricing people expect.

Richard Pleper said HBO Go will be a premium prices, as such it’ll be priced accordingly.

This statement gives some indication that subscribers would pay between $15 and $20 a month for the service. If this is true, it would be two times the amount of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, which all cost about $8 a month. It would cost nearly the same amount as Dish’s recently released Sling TV, where subscribers pay $20 a month for the initial package.

Still, one has to wonder if the HBO programming is going to be worth it. After all, it’s much less than Amazon and Netflix, which have also gotten involved with original programming that’s won fans and critics over with their Transparent, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.

Plepler said there is a significant amount of competition, but that more doesn’t equate to better. He said, “Only better is better”.

Plepler said he feels HBO’s exclusive content such as True Detective and Game of Thrones is going to give enough oomph power to woo 10 million users to its service.

He said the company will look at content that they would to make an investment in.

What does this mean in terms of the company’s decision to provide access of HBO’s library to Amazon Prime? Prime subscribers can watch the complete archive of shows with The Wire and The Sopranos without the need of pay-TV and HBO.

Plepler said the decision to open its vault to other has only expanded interest in the new content it has to offer.
