Dish Network’s Sling TV is now available for streaming.
The service has plans starting at $20, but can be used for free for seven days. It offers more than 12 live, linear channels like CNN, Cartoon Network, CNN, Disney Channel, ESPN, Food Network, HGTV and TNT.
Sling TV’s arrival could bring a shakeup to the whole pay-TV industry. One of the biggest reasons would-be cord-cutters hang onto pay-TV services is the desire for sports programming. However, Sling TV brings ESPN, TNT and TBS to the lineup, which also has NBA programming.
Director of Research at Parks Associates Bret Sappington said should consumers take Dish TV’s offer of Sling TV, which has no live programming from key networks like ABC, Fox, PBS, CBS and NBC, it may weaken their position in negotiations for fees on Internet, satellite and cable carriage of their signals.
He said if Sling TV is successful without any broadcast channels, it could make big broadcasters sit up and take notice.
Sling TV was developed for people – like Millennials – who don’t want to pay for TV service. 82 percent of young adult consumers have pay-TV service, but 87 percent of older consumers have some sort of pay-TV service.
In the next few weeks, Sling TVs programming package is set to get better. Sling TV’s core package will have AMC content available. That’s right! AMC Networks has struck a deal with Dish Network to offer The Walking Dead and Mad Men to its consumers. Other AMC channels will also be available: BBC America, BBC World News, WE tv, IFC and SundanceTV.
Sling TV announced its Sports Extra package, which includes: Universal Sports, The SEC Network, ESPNEWS, ESPNU and many others for $5. A Kids Extra package is also available and includes Disney Junior, Disney XD, CNN Headline News and The Cooking Channel for an additional $5 a month.
On-demand movies can be rented as well – $3.99 for standard definition, $4.99 for high definition.
The Sling TV app can be found on Android, iOS, Roku and Roku TV devices. Apps for Macintosh and Windows computers are also available. Supper for both the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV stick is in the works.
