Hulu Acquires Rights To Seinfeld Along With Showtime Programming

Hulu now offers all 180 episodes of one of the most beloved TV-shows of all-time: Seinfeld.

The streaming video service executives are hopeful that the acquirement of this show will persuade more people to sign up for its $8 a month premium service. Hulu is free for many shows but people can only relive the Seinfeld days with a premium membership.

Mike Hopkins, CEO of Hulu, said the company feels it s a unique piece of property. He said there are very few TV shows that include the puffy shirt in the Smithsonian. Hopkins said with Seinfeld’s inclusion onto Hulu, it gives a whole new audience the chance to experience the show. He said the company feels it’ll bring more people to the streaming service.

The website’s subscription service, which was once called Hulu Plus, has had nearly nine million households signed up over the last few years. Of course, its number pale when compared to Netflix 40-plus million U.S. households.

Hopkins said the goal is to bring Hulu to those numbers. He credits Netflix for its groundbreaking efforts to help other streaming video services.

A good chunk of Netflix’s market goes from the international markets whereas Hulu is available in the U.S. only.  Hopkins said the company is looking to see if expanding overseas is something that it can do.

Hulu is owned by three of the largest media companies – The Walt Disney Company, 21st Century Fox and Comcast. It provides people with a wonderful way to catch on TV shows they may have initially missed on Fox, NBC, ABC, etc. with its on-demand delivery system. It’s also got original content and is acting like an online store as well.  On Tuesday, the company announced it came to an agreement with Showtime to offers Showtime content for $9 a month.

Hulu executives are focusing their efforts of Hulu’s subscription version even though its free, ad-supported portion is doing very well.
