Award shows have been considered out of touch with today’s world. However, the Golden Globe has embraced the new platform after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the award winners for two key TV categories
- Best Actor in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical – Jeffery Tambor
- Best Television Series, Comedy or Musical – Transparent
The win for the Jill Soloway series is the first of its kind at the Golden Globes as well as a first for Amazon, which is moving more into original programming.
The Globes’ acceptance is similar to the decision-making that the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences have been looking to make, especially as the content delivery platform changes, award shows need to decide what fits in and what doesn’t fit in.
In 2013, the Emmys nominated Netflix’s “House of Cards” nine times with three wins for the show’s first season. They have yet to nominate anything from Amazon.
According to John Leverence, senior vice president of awards at TV Academy, it’s about telecommunications arts and sciences, not just television arts and sciences. Awards are generally reactive, but it appears the industry is getting a bit ahead.
President Bruce Rosenblum said the Emmys aimed to become “platform-agnostic”. In the beginning, this helped Netflix, although Amazon pushed hard for “Alpha House”, a Garry Trudeau series that did not get nominated. Transparent aired just one episode during the qualifying period and could not be nominated for the award.
Timing has been one thing that has propelled the Golden Globes to look more advanced in the Emmys. While the Emmys are held in August or September, honoring programs that ended the previous May, the Globes are at the start at the year and pick up shows that previewed in the fall and wasn’t Emmy-eligible.
The Motion Picture Academy is also dealing with changing formats though it’s sticking more to the movie definition of things that play in theater. The Academy is now letting films released on streaming and video services with their theatrical release to be Oscar-qualified. In the shorts categories, they let films with a video premiere to be nominated if they win top awards at specific film festivals.
Netflix has had a hand in all this. Along with the Golden Globe win for Kevin Spacey and “House of Cards”, the Virunga distributor has been shortlisted for the Oscars even though it did have a theatrical run before it debuted on Netflix.
